History

The Wine Region of Colares

was demarcated in 1908, being the second oldest demarcated region in our country. It sits in an area of dunes, on the coast of Sintra, between the hill and the Atlantic Ocean, from Cabo da Roca to the villages Assafora and Cortesia. The connection of Colares to wine is lost in time, but it is known that at the time of the Roman occupation, wine was already made in this region. Later, in 1230, King Afonso III, handed over land to the nobles under the condition of them implementing vineyard cultivation. The region of Colares became famous at the end of the 19th century when its greatest threat, the phylloxera, collapsed on viticulture.

Throughout Europe this tiny insect devastated most of the vineyards but the region of Colares resisted. Here, the depth of the roots, did not allow the propagation of the insect as it happened in other types of soil.

This is how our history was born, linked to the resilience and recovery of vines that were once almost extinct.

The proximity to the sea and the adjacent weather conditions make the work in the vineyards more demanding, however, these are the factors that outline the authenticity of the Terroir, as we say “Tradition and Soul by the Sea”.

Our wines

start in the land, in our vineyards and end in your glasses. All of them are designed in the vineyards, what we call “field blend”. Meaning old vines planted with a mixture of varieties. This heterogeneity gives depth to the final blend, obtaining a superior quality wine. This is how we honor the traditions, keep the history of our Terroir and at the same time give it the stamp of this new world.

Adding to the vines that we inherited from our family, we planted Malvasia from Colares and Ramisco, without using grafts and planted on sandy soils. Coming in the near future we will have Alvarinho and Pinot Noir, planted in clay-limestone soils.

The challenge is continuous, in the vineyards, winery and wine tourism, which we are developing. We invite you to come and discover our wines, vineyards and passion for the land by the sea.
